The squished seats, the screaming child who kicks your seat from behind, the long line ups for the bathroom...the seasoned economy traveller knows the nightmares of being relegated to the back of the plane all too well. Here are some tips to move up into first class without having to fork over your life savings.
Use your frequent flyer points. These days, everyone carries credit cards associated with a major frequent flyer program. If you don't already have one, get one and if you do, cash in those points you've been racking up so you can fly in style. With all the black out periods and restrictions associated with frequent flyer points, you are better off using them to upgrade.
Get the most bang for your mileage buck. Check which model plane is flying before you buy your ticket. You are more likely to get an upgrade with a 747 then on a 737. Also go for long haul flights when you try to upgrade.
Volunteer to stay behind. If you don't have to be at your destination right away, check with the attendant at the desk to see if the flight is full. If it is, ask if they need any volunteers to be bumped. You're guaranteed to get a first class ticket if you're bumped.
Improve your odds by flying on off peak days. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are not very busy flying days however Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays are popular for both business and pleasure travellers which will decrease your odds.
Use an agent. In the new world of DIY internet reservations, agents have had to develop into wiley travel gurus in order to maintain business. They are able to sleuth around to score discounts on business and first class tickets especially if you book way in advance (40 - 60 days).
Dress to impress. Never wear jeans, tracksuits or running shoes. Your chances of travelling first class are a whole lot better if you look like you belong there.
